Why have a smokefree home and car?

With over 80% of cigarette smoke being invisible it is impossible to see where it goes.  15% of smoke is visible as it contains tar but 85% of smoke is invisible because of gases and toxins like carbon monoxide and methanol (more commonly known as rocket fuel) that cannot be seen.

Smoke lingers in the air several hours after being put out and clings to fabrics like clothes, curtains and furniture even despite good intentions of smoking by an open door or window.

Secondhand smoke is a mixture of two forms of smoke that comes from burning tobacco, mainstream and side stream smoke.

Mainstream smoke = smoker breathes out (15% of the secondhand smoke)

Side stream smoke = burning end of cigarettes (85% of the secondhand smoke)

What does secondhand smoke do to babies and young children?

Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals which include poisonous gases and 50 of these are known to cause cancer, when someone smokes secondhand smoke is produced which puts loved ones at risk.  Babies and children are particularly vulnerable as their bodies are still growing and developing. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more at risk of bronchitis, asthma attacks and ear infections.  Babies exposed are more at risk of cot death.
